We were doing this about 25 years ago on rear axles using a spectrum analyzer, if I remember correctly. There may be an SAE paper out there that will give you some ideas...
I also did something like this 20+ years ago. We looked at the spectrum of several sets of good gearboxes and several sets of bad ones. Once we determined the differences we developed an instrument with filters for the significant frequency bands. We actually had three different problems we could detect (bad bearings, gear tooth misalignment, and burr or gouge on a tooth). Each produced a different sound.
