What's up with FP-1600

Got the bad news Friday when attempting to order from NI that the FP-1600 is
on hold by engineering, but sales offered no details. Since I've got a
half-dozen of them in service I'd like to know what the problem is, and
you'd think that as NI manages to send me two or three marketing emails a
week they'd advise on these types of important matters as well. Whatever,
if anyone knows the details, please share.

If there is anything wrong with the FP-1600 modules, I would also like to
hear about it - I've got 2 major projects due to commision within the next
few weeks using large numbers of FP-1600's, and I really don't want to find
out whats wrong the hard way.
Cheers,
Ben

Ok,
I have spoken with the NI rep about these modules, and apparently they
have been put on "Engineering Hold" to allow a redesign of the Ethernet controllers
- the current components were found to have some problems meeting the temperature
operating requirements. What this means in practical terms I have no idea,
but the redesigned modules should be released by the end of the year (i.e.
December), so if you have any trouble, hassle NI to get replacements.
Cheers,
Ben

I spoke with someone in the RMA department at NI. He said that NI has
had a problem getting enough parts for FP-1600 units, and that a parts
vendor has sent NI some "out of spec" communications components, which
is causing problems in a small percentage of FP-1600 units. He also
said that the hold by engineering would most likely be lifted by the
end of this week.

Word is that the hold has been lifted and that there are options for
upgrading/fixing the FP-1600's if required. I believe that there is some
sort ot testing software that will enable you to test whether the FP-1600's
you have are at risk of the fault.

Thanks for the info,
if you find the test software could you post a link? I'd really like to
test my FP modules before I go on-site to commision them.
Cheers,
Ben

The FP-1600 was placed on engineering hold in order to investigate isolated
complaints of incorrect behavior. Several of these cases were found to be
the result of misuse or of use outside specified operating conditions. Additionally,
an issue was found that may affect roughly 1 percent of the modules that
have been shipped. National Instruments will be sending a letter with a description
of the problem, availability of diagnostic materials, and return/repair instructions
to all FP-1600 customers.
