VIs stored in TortoiseCVS converted to ASCII format

This is not really a LabVIEW question but I did not see another forum for this.  Maybe someone in the LabVIEW community can answer this.

I am using TortoiseCVS for my configuration management tool.  LabVIEW VIs written using LabVIEW 2010 are OK when added to CVS.  But when I commit the file, the VIs are converted to an ASCII format and can no longer be exported as a VI.  My work around is to ZIP the VIs before I add them.  The problem is, I have to ZIP to add and then UNZIP if I need to edit something.  Extra steps that are a bit of a pain.  I have searched NI's knowledge base and the CVS documentation with out finding anything of use.  Any ideas?

Thanks

We are using TortoiseSVN (not sure about CVS?)  but we are able to use LV 8.61 2009 and 2010 (These are versions I have used under this SCC) with no problems.
