Have a look at Application note 154. Extendend precision is platform dependent (10 bytes on Windows/Linux (80bit IEEE EXT) and 16 bytes on MAC (Apple double-double format) and Sun (IEEE 128bit EXT).

To keep flattened EXT data platform indepdendent, it is always stored in 128 bit sun EXT format.

Ha !
At last, that could an objective reason to prefer MacIntosh : to be able to get 14 more decimal digits.
However, on my Powerbook, it seems that the 7 last bytes are alway equal to zero (Extended coded on 9 bytes ???). Should I throw it directly to the garbage ?
