Quantifying width of spectral peaks

Can anyone give me some advice on how to quantify the "broadness" of the
peak in a frequency spectrum. I'd like to be able to set an alarm when
the frequency of the monitored signal varies beyond preset limits within
a single (short) sampling interval.

It would be desirable if the weighting of the points increased as the
deviation from the nominal frequency increased. Being a mechanical guy,
I'm imagining something analogous to the moment of inertia of the area
under the peak with respect to the nominal frequency.

Is there a .vi anywhere close to this, or do I build my own?
