If you go to control panel --> Admin tools --> Event Viewer --> system you might see lots of errors generated once every 2 minutes. This might be a clue as to our problem. I should mention that last night I left my laptop on and came in this morning and was unable to access remote tags. I tried deploying the library multiple times before I rebooted. After that I tried deploying the library multiple times and just couldn't get the remote tags to show up in DSM. About 5 minutes after I had stopped troubleshooting, I hit the refresh on DSM and it showed the remote tags. I'm not sure if this is the same issue as with the simulator tags but it very well could be.
Hope this helps.

Matt:
That's similar to the behavior I'm seeing. When I attempt to expand the simulator I/O server, I lose everything in DSM. Every I/O server (that worked previously) ceases to give me tags, and I've sometimes had to restart the Shared Variable Engine to get any items to show up in DSM again. Occasionally, Windows returns a timeout error when sending a stop command to the SVE service.
It's almost as if the SVE is hanging up on the simulated I/O server. I think you're close with your assessment regarding the NI portion of things. My guess is that one of the background components probably handles the I/O server, but not DSM.
Can you verify what OPC version the CemSim server is compliant with? Additionally, are you using the default poll rate with your I/O server? What is the update rate of the CemSim server?

I'm sorry to bump this old thread but i'm experiencing something similar to what is described in here.
I'm running Windowx XP on a virtual machine where i have Lookout 6.2 installed and LabVIEW 2012.
We have a cRIO system from which we publish scan engine tags to the network and in return, we have a client (virtual machine) where we have a Shared variable engine process that contains multiple variables that are PSP-bound to the scan engine tags published by the cRIO system.
On the windows machine, i want to link the shared variable from the SVE into the Lookout process. However, when i create a lookout object of type OPCclient with the "National Instrument.Variable Engine.1" server selected as the opc server, I cannot see the list of tags. Therefore, i ended up using the OPC Quick Client to test the communication with shared variables but they would not be listed. Afterwards, i decided to install a different OPC Server (KEPware) and just test the OPC Server/Client connection. Tags that i created under the KEPware Communication server won't even show up! I suspected a DCOM configuration issue. I went through all the steps recommended by OPC Training Institute to setup Access and Permissions on the local machine and still.. i cannot see the list of tags.
I can run the same configuration on my Win7 laptop and it works perfectly. I even copied the working DCOM configuration to my WindowsXP machine (virtual machine) and that won't work either.
Consequently, i've installed multiple OPC Servers and with OPC Quick Client, i can actually "connect" to the different servers (NI OPC Server, Variable Engine, KepWare, etc) without actual connection errors.. but in any case, i cannot see the list of tags.
Did anyone find a definite solution for the original problem described in this thread?
Any idea why the OPC tags won't be listed even though the server/client connection does not generate any errors?
Thanks,
Eric
