It is a more automated way of opening each VI in a folder
and saving it. As this happens, each VI will be upgraded
to the latest version and saved with the same name, just
as if you had done it by hand.
It is normally used when you upgrade to a new version
and you would like a toolkit or vi.lib or instrument
drivers to be upgraded all at once rather than a little
bit at a time as you work on your project. Other reasons
are that you have lots of VIs from another platform that
you wish to update to your platform. This is most often
needed when the application is large and the computer
has little memory. If the computer is reasonably
stout,
just loading the app and Saving All is often good enough,
and Mass Compile is never required, it is just there to
automate the process.
It is never a bad idea to make a backup at these times
of upgrade, but it is no different or more dangerous
than doing this by hand.
