Is there an easy way to achieve the functionality in the picture below:
I want the bold zeros to be terminals on the block diagram that I can update. Would you agree in saying the top set looks better than the bottom?

Here you go
Start with the simple numeric the trick of course is to set both the BG and Boarder to Transparent by toggling (or left click and right-click) and select T for both

I have not seen a simple numeric before, which palette are they on? (I can only find them on quick drop).
