I have done something similar, except I used the tick symbol to indicate that the item has been selected and used '0 or 1' selection mode.
The steps would be:
- check if the listbox value - if the value has changes or >-1 and there is no tick there then put a tick - if the value has changes or >-1 and there is a tick there then put remove the tick
