Does anyone know what Provider I need to use to make this work? Or is there an example connection string? The documentation on NI is very poor on this side. I am able to access the database from command line and the MySQL client.

You need to install the myODBC connector. The database Toolkit uses simply DAO/ADO to use whatever ADO, ODBC or .Net database drivers you have installed.
It can not document all possible database drivers that are out there, And yes I know you will claim that mySQL is THE standard but since it was taken over by Oracle some fime ago it is just ons of the many Oracle database backends and not the one they do most effort to sell.
