Good to know that you were able to fix it. These things are sometimes very sophisticated and can be very hard to detect and remove.

 

(I recently run across a computer that had a similar infection and it embedded itself as part of the audio driver. Not only did it load very early as part of the system, it got restored from a backup as soon as window noticed it missing after removal. It also prevented virtually all AV programs from running or updating, blocked access to windows update, prevented running the command prompt or registry editor, etc.)
