I'm working on a project where we want a closed loop control of an industrial servo motor. I'm wondering if an NI myRIO has the ability to replace a compactRIO controller to control a servo drive that communicates over ethernet using NI SoftMotion Module. How can I use LabView to control a motor using a NI myRIO with a drive that communicates via EtherCAT? Do I need an arduino with an ethernet shield to talk to the drive via ethernet then commmunicate with the myRIO with a Digilent Shield Adapter (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/212736)? Let me know what you think.

If you are able to communicate with the ethernet stepper drive via ethernet using a compactRIO, then you should be able to communicate with it over ethernet using a myRIO that has ethernet connection. Since the myRIO doesn't have a ethernet port, the setup that you described seems like it's the way to go.

Here's a cleaner solution to adding Ethernet to myRIO :
