Yes, you could (and prob. will) be switched into other areas. But this does
not mean 6 years experience is worthless:
First, experience has the benefit that one learns to solve problems, instead
of learning a trick to solve problems. So one could use this experience for
other areas.
Second, if one has 6 years experience, it will not be pure technical
experience. During these 6 years one will also grow communication skills,
project management skills, etc.
Anyway, judge yourself....
