I Lost My Copy of 6.1

Well, I've been distracted. I had a domestic situation go really bad (roommate/business partner/caretaker took me for a financial ride), and I've been trying to keep up with that and the lawsuit...so I haven't been able to get much done on LabVIEW.

I have an appointment with a neurologist to look at a brain MRI to see what's going on up there (yes folks, I finally got my head examined...LOL). We'll see what's going on.

I actually sat down for a few minute one day trying to solve a few questions a friend had posted on his interview process. One was simple: create a program that searches one string for another string. I cheated of course, but tried writing it manually, and got utterly frustrated, and had to go to pseudocode and structure (I NEVER had to do that before). I gave up after a while. He had another question, writing a simple program to 'traverse a binary tree, and identify and report nodes travelled. After looking up what a binary tree was, I gave up. It looks simple enough; perhaps too simple.

Once I get my financial mess straightened out, I'm sure I'll have time to get back into things. It seems like there's something definitely different; as I never used to have to write pseudocode, but the basic skills are still there; which is encouraging. Of course, all the responses and concern are equally encouraging as well, so thank you for that.

It may take me a while to update; but feel free to bug me in a month or two.

Hi There,
I'm in the same mess (see earlier post ...Borrow 6.0 disks...).
How did you manage to get NI to burn a disk for you? I've been trying but all I can get is a quote for 8.2. I'll have to do that out of my own pocket and I simply can't afford it - it's miles away from a meager budget.
I'm not a developer or consultant. I use it only for a few programs at work and they own the license for it.
If you could help me in any way I would greatly appreciate it. Is there a specific person you spoke with in order to get the disks?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I imagine we were able to send him that copy because we already knew he purchased it. If you would like, you can download the evaluation version of 8.2.1 (all features available for 30 days) from this site. We, however, don't just give away copies for free. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I have proof of purchase in the form of PO, Packing Slip, Cancelled Check, and Certificate of Ownership. However, I understand where NI is coming from in terms of running a business - I work for a living too! 🙂
8.2 has a lot of goodies and I am working towards authorization to get the upgrade.
In any case, I was able to get a copy of a copy last night but use my company's license number. That's legal, right?

I'll be back for help later when we get 8.2!
I promise to keep the disks in the safe this time.

"That's legal, right?"

I am not NI nor am I a lawyer...

I believe that LV 8 and up have licenses built in. If your number works you are good to go.

Wow labviewguru...  all this time I thought you were still pissed off about the low rating someone gave your answer...  I used to check for your return periodically, but I (selfishly) don't come here very often anymore.

What a sobering tale... I can't even fathom what it would be like to lose a skill set like you had and I am truly moved (a rarity) by your ordeal.

I'm sorry I saw your post so late but I'm glad NI took care of you.

Take care and good luck!

Well, having to deal with all the nonsense was counter-productive. Sure, I helped a few people here and there, and that was useful to me; but having to deal with all the other crap just made it not be worth while to be on the forums anymore. I have since learned that public forums aren't really a place I feel safe at. People are very quick to jump all over someone, and even more quick to make rash and most often incorrect judgments. And given my poor ability to communicate my thoughts; people quite often misperceive my intentions. That, and the fact that I always have good intentions just make public forums too stressful for me, even today. I haven't been doing much in the way of LabVIEW because I've been busy with school; but I did write a small program for a class I was taking to generate a random table. I'm also trying to get in touch with NI sales and development folks as there is a potential market in my new industry. I would LOVE to see NI create a GIS package; as the ones we have are pure crap (ESRI - a command line package with a very clumbsy GUI running on it - not very user friendly.) I am also going to see if I can get together with NI to create some tools for the field I am in, natural resources, hopefully to help NI expand into this market; but even if they don't want to; it'll be a way to reactivate my programming career in line with my new career. For those interested, the website for my new career, if I haven't posted it yet, is: http://www.wolveswolveswolves.org I havent' updated it in years, literally; but you get the general idea. And, the link to the gallery is /NewGallery if you want to see the photos I took - actually taken before I was a LabVIEW programmer. Oh yeah...and does anyone have any tips on Unix distributions that aren't too expensive? I've given up trying to figure out Linux; and would like to run Unix on a separate hard drive on my system (i86). There's a GIS software package I'd like to try to run (GRASS). Anyway, thanks again for everyone's support and help. My mental situation has actually improved. I've reduced the stress in my life, and gotten off the stupid Zoloft I was on, and have more of my faculties back. I'm confident that with some cognitive therapy, and after I've resolved my ongoing financial issues (basically, once I get on disability), I'll be back to close to how I used to be. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully my ideas about developing software for the natural resources industry work out and I'll be able to come to the forums more often. It may take a couple more years; while I graduate in May, I found an assistanceship that will allow me to stay here and complete my Masters Degree. Well...back to homework. GIS is fun...they're teaching me all about data types, databases, SQL, and other redundant stuff I should be teaching them! Haha.

It's a shame you don't like public forums. maybe you should give LAVA a try. it's different.

Hey, nice to hear from you again Michael. I used to be in LAVA. Actually, it was my message about Patrick Kelley, the former NI employee who ripped off my company when I took over the ATE division, stole my contacts, and slandered me to my clients and potential clients; resulting in him illegally (under California anti-SLAPP laws) that really burned me on public forums for LabVIEW. It's really sad. That guy cost me my business; and consulting with an attorney...after it was too late, I found out I could have sued him for $950,000, including $200,000 for his SLAPP suit - had I been able to afford an attorney or had he actually legally served me (I found out about the lawsuit after he got a default and I was unable to get that reversed due to the judge in San Diego being unwilling to grant a rehearing...I was in Idaho by then.) I have no fear of retaliation from Patrick now, especially given I know the law, and because if he does try to sue me again, it reopens the case and I get the opportunity to finally collect from that thief. I never did anything wrong or illegal; I never mentioned his name, and most importantly, I only ever said what was true, what he actually did. I was deeply upset about the whole thing because not only did Patrick Kelley rip me off (stole $200,000 in contracts from my company when I took over ATE which led to my being given the division because there was no business), but the cooperative agreement I had with NI at the time as a vendor (sorry, can't remember what those are called...Alliance?) was cancelled by the local manager because he was a friend of Patrick, and wouldn't hear my side of the story. I never held it against NI; but it really burned me bad. I think that the worst was that it made me not want to ever participate in the forums again; that was another reason I left this forum as well; which upsets me because I was no longer able to contribute to the LabVIEW programming community. I will say that my experience taught me a great deal. I am currently, by coincidence, initiating criminal and legal action against a group of people who have been maliciously libeling and harassing me, simply because they don't like me and what I tried to contribute to a community I became a part of a few years ago. I speak my mind, and I stand up for the little guy; and bullies don't like it. Anyway, my experience with the libel suit by Patrick taught me the laws, and how to protect myself. I have to believe the LabVIEW community is more responsible and better at policing itself than this community I have been a participant in. But, I hope that everyone knows their rights, and their responsibilities. It's okay to warn people about those who, like Patrick, have highly questionable ethics and have done you wrong; but it is definitely not okay to maliciously lie about someone to attempt to damage their reputation or hurt their business. I do wish I could have gotten Patrick, in a legal sense, for what he did to me, and more importantly, for what he did for the LabVIEW community and the clients in San Diego. Hopefully his ways caught up with him. I hear they might have. Anyway...sorry about the long reply; but you brought up rather sore subject with me. Definitely not your fault; and no worries...I just wanted to make sure you knew of my previous participation and why I left the group. On a personal note; my life is stalled right now. I haven't been able to work with LabVIEW at all for many months. But, I'm hoping things resolve very soon, and I can get back into the swing of things. I think all the time about the opportunities in my new field for the use of LabVIEW, as you saw by my previous post. I'd love to work with NI to create a GIS package. The ones on the market are all very pathetic, with the "best" and most popular one having a very clumbsy Windows interface and being EXTREMELY unfriendly to users. National Instruments has always had very user-friendly software, and I think they could make a killing in the GIS market. Hopefully they can realize that, and have the resources to invest in such software. Who knows, maybe I might create one in LabVIEW myself...though I wouldn't have a clue how to deal with the graphical end of a GIS software package. That would require an engine that utilized many detailed components of the processor and video driver systems. I'm just not up on those. Okay, enough already...
