How do I know what my computer's application font is?

What font does Windows choose for its "application font"?

It's set by Window's default icon font setting. Right click on the desktop and go to Properties (or Control Panel -> Display).

Under the Appearance tab, choose Item->Icon. That's the same as the Application font (w98 is MS Sans Serif (western) at 8 pts).
