How do I compare a string containing the bracket "[" character?

I am receiving ANSI escape sequences in a telnet session with a device. A bracket character "[" is embedded in the sequences. I want to compare the strings I receive against some known strings using the Match Pattern function. However, Match Pattern uses the bracket as a special expression option and I never get a match. Has anyone encountered problems using the bracket?

use the "\" character to cancel interpretation of the [ function. ie \[
