Getting install error, The instruction at "0x%08lx" referenced memory at ...

When I try to install LabVIEW 7.1 on Windows XP SP3, I right away get this error:

The instruction at "0x%08lx" reference memory at "0x%08lx". The memory could not be "%s".

Any thoughts what is causing this and how to fix it? I've was told by my comrade that he tried installing LabVIEW 8.6 and got the same error.

Hi pippert,

You get this because the installer has encountered a fatal error.  If you aborted during installation of an NI product, uninstall the product through Add/Remove Programs and then retry installation.  If that does not resolve the issue, you may have a corrupted installation disk.

I would like some more information about your setup.

You are using LabVIEW 7.1 on an XP SP3 machine as well?

Does the CD work on another computer?

Were you ever able to successfully install software from this CD?

Does this computer have any other National Instruments software on it? If so, we can try removing it all and trying the install again.

Hello.

I'm having the same problem both with the "NI-DAQmx for Windows 2000/XP" installation disk included with a GPIB-USB-HS interface cable, and the "NI Device Drivers- August 2009" installation disk included with Labview 2009.

Both install correctly on a machine with Windows XP SP2 and LabView 2009, and they both crash with similar messages on another machine (with Win XP SP2 and LabView 2009 as well) as the Autorun calls the Setup program.

Is there any indication as where the problem could be?

Thanks.

Hi ppbert,

Have you been able to install any other programs (NI products or otherwise) on the machine one which the install failed? If not, you may need to reformat this machine. However, if you are only unable to install NI products, check to see that if you have any other NI products on that machine and uninstall them and retry your current install.

Also, are trying to upgrade or do an install from scratch?

Hello!
Thank you for your reply.

Yes. There is LabView 2009 installed on it,with MAX, NI-VISA and several other drivers.

It's a fresh installation of NI-488.2. I even tried downloading the 2.7.3 version from ni.com, but it doesn't work either.

I tried downloading and substituting two different versions of the National Instrument Installer "setup.exe" (2.4.0 and 2.5.1.88) and the matching "NISysInf.dll".

None of them worked.

If not, you may need to reformat this machine.

Besides the obvious hassle that this means, I've read posts on this forum by several people saying that it didn't work for them. I'm about to try it, though, as a last resource.

By the way, I tried starting the .msi files manually and those work. But I don't know which one(s) to run in order to have a full install of NI-488.2 out of the installation package found here. Could you tell me?

Thank you.

Hey ppbert,

We recommend uninstalling the current NI software on that erroring machine and a restart. Then try to install in order of Labview developer, toolkits/add ons, and finally drivers. Hopefully this will work for you and you won't have to resort to reformatting.
