I am trying to open a reference to Excel, and I get the error  (-2147312566). I need more information on how to resolve this.

That is sometimes caused by registration problems with the ActiveX classes. You can try to re-register Excel as suggested here. (The article is geared for LabWindows, but it applies to LabVIEW as well.)
