Problem resolved thank you all for your help! 

 

I had to use a crossed cable if I want to use the serial port

Glad to hear it is fixed.  It might have helped if you mentioned much earlier that you were actually using different cable setups between the working and non-working situations.

 

For future reference to anyone following this thread, the need for a null modem cable is mentioned on page 34 of the linked manual.

 

It was also an idea I suggested back in message #3 of this thread.
