How to retrieve the desciption of a COM port like it is in the task manager?

Take a look at the VISA Property Node

Instrument I/O---> VISA ---> Advanced ---> VISA Property Node

Right click on the Property node once you have it on the block diagram change it to Read and look at some of these properties for the VISA resource in question

Select Property ---> Interface Information ---> Interface Description

Select Property ---> General Settings --->  Manufacturer Name

Select Property ---> General Settings --->  Manufacturer Identification

You might have to combine the text of one or more of the VISA properties

First, that is the device manager not the task manager.

The device manager refers to identifying information in Windows Hive Keys (HKEY)

You can use either the Windows Registry API or, in the case of COM equipment, the System API can filter those device properties.
