Can't use "Place on the block diagram" from help

Hello All, Simple question I hope.

Used Ctrl+? to bring up help files. Tried to use "Place on the block diagram" to add a VI to my new block diagram. System clicked and hard drive whirred, but no VI on my block diagram. Help?

Many Thanks,
Max

Hi Max,

There are a number of reasons why the Place/Find buttons may not work from the Help window:

1. Are you behind a firewall?
The URL to the VI may be blocked by your firewall. Try disabling your firewall temporarily and see if that fixes your problem.

2. Did you install Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Some of the new network security updates in WinXP SP2 do not allow ActiveX or scrips to run, and therefore breaks the Find/Place feature of LabVIEW's Help Server.

3. Restart the NI Service Locator
The NI Service Locator is a service that runs in the background of the operating system that enables the execution of the Example Finder as well as the Help options in LabVIEW. You can manually restart the service by going to: Start » Contr
ol Panel » Administrative Tools » Services. In the list of services you should see: NI Service Locator. To restart this service, right-click on the entry and select Stop. Wait a minute until the service has stopped and then right-click and select Start. Restart LabVIEW and see if you still have any problems.

Hello and Thanks.

1. Yes, behind a firewall. I disabled NIS, but this did not solve the problem.

2. Yes, I installed XP SP2. Would I enable Active X through Internet Explorer options? If not, recommendations/instructions on what needs to be enabled and how to do it?

3. Tried this, but it did not solve the problem.

Again, many thanks. I suspect it is related to number 1 or 2 or both. Any guidelines how to solve greatly appreciated.

Hi Max,

The issue is most likely related to WinXP SP2. NI R&D is currently looking into a permanent fix for the issue. There are changes that need to be made in the linking to the HTML files that the Help server uses. The HTML file needs to have a line added so that the page will be loaded using the security context of the referenced website. There is more information on this posting: http://www.metaproducts.com/mp/mpSupport_User_Forums_Message.asp?id=7306
When checking security restrictions, "(0017)" is the length of the domain/url and "http://www.ni.com" is the domain the page should use.

The easiest (and recommended) solution would simply be to remove WinXP SP2. The above suggestion is simply something that is available for inves
tigation into the issue and not something that is documented as a workaround yet but I thought you might want to know some more background information relating to the issue.

Again, the solution at this point is to uninstall WinXP SP2. NI is aware of the issue and a fix is under investigation.

Max,

I had the same problem with 7.1.

Machine is an AB 6155 w/1.7G CPU & Win2K.

I had 7.0 installed & working on the machine with no problems, and
installed 7.1 when I got the new CDs.

"Place on the blok diagram" and "Find on Functions Pallete" continued to
work flawlessly in 7.0, but when I stoped 7.0 & started 7.1, and even
opened the same vi, they didn't work.

I tried the 7.1 install on two additional PC's, another AB (that didn't
have 7.0 installed) and an IBM.

Tried a virgin install of Win2K (in case it was the AB install) and that
didn't solve it.

My NI rep & myself worked with NI in Austin and my company's IT folks
checking firewalls, anti-virus, internal server addresses, services,
latest SP's, etc, for several days...never got it fixed
. Austin's final
suggestion was to change the OS over to XPpro and let them know if that
worked. I figure that was a waist of time, since I want to use Win2K.

I finally just uninstalled 7.1 and stayed with 7.0

Good luck.

Mike
