Can I use the mouse wheel to control a vertical scroll bar?

I am collecting lots of data in a multi-line string.  I'd like to use my mouse wheel to scroll through the hundreds of lines of data, instead of clicking on the vertical scroll bar to change positions, but I cannot see any easy ways to do this.  Am I missing something simple?  Or is this a difficult thing to set up?  Thanks.
