Can I connect a geiger counter?

Hello. First post Smiley Tongue

Can I connect a geiger counter  to LabVIEW?

Why?

I am in Japan and I am considering my students to collect data around our university.

What can LabVIEW do once I connect - if I can - the Geiger counter?

Thank you in advance.

Michael

This only depends on the interfaces your geiger counter provides, e.g. USB, RS232, Ethernet, ... and if there is an API provided (such as dll's).

Whatever you have, LabVIEW will be able to communicate with the geiger counter as with any other instrument.

Assuming you want to use 'simple' geiger tube and have a simple voltage output (buffered cap coupled from HV supply or just an R from kathode to GND) you might try the soundcard input (with appropriate clamping circuitry 😉 )

Search the forum for a continuous soundcard capture (Someone wrote a new WIN-driver wrapper that might better fit your needs)

Take a look here:

http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~marek/pra/index.html

The author even calculates spectra of geiger tubes ( running in proportional mode) with the soundcard.
