If you're willing to spend a lot of money ($4-$5 K), you can get a lot of
this motion stuff ready made. I bought motors, controllers, stages, etc,
from Velmex (www.velmex.com) and found it was fairly easy to program.

at my time cost, learning all about motors and putting
together everything myself probably would have cost more. They don't have
LabView VI's, but programming their controller in LabView was not too
difficult.
