Nabsys is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for our Instrument Software group in Providence, RI. Full-time, direct hire, hybrid (on-site at least one day a week, more if you want it).
We build the OhmX platform, an electronic genome mapping instrument that pulls long DNA molecules through proprietary nanodetectors at high velocity. The instrument control software is LabVIEW, it runs in labs today, and it is a real application with real users.
What you'd own
- The current LabVIEW instrument application: features, debugging, performance and reliability work, incremental refactoring. You'd be the senior voice on it.
- Architecture and build-out of the next-generation instrument application on a text-based stack, primarily Python.
- An automated unit and functional test suite for that next generation, more or less from scratch.
- Python tools for data analysis and integration with the instrument.
- Requirements, design, and architecture documentation for software that ships to customer labs.
- A leading role in maturing how the team develops software.
What we're looking for
- BS in Engineering, CS, or a related science, 5+ years of relevant software experience.
- Hands-on LabVIEW experience: able to debug, extend, and refactor an existing production application.
- Proficiency in Python, strong object-oriented design, and sound software engineering practices.
- Experience taking production software through a full development lifecycle: requirements, design and architecture documentation, unit tests, test plans, and test reports.
- Hands-on system-level test and integration experience, and the judgment to balance long-term maintainability against short-term delivery needs.
- Willingness to work with AI coding agents. We've standardized on Claude and use it daily for code, tests, and documentation. Prior experience isn't required, interest is.
- Comfort in the lab. Debugging happens on a physical instrument.
Nice to have:
SQLite, established LabVIEW architectures (Actor Framework), CI/CD and Git/Bitbucket/Jira, serial/TCP-IP/SPI/I2C/CAN, prior scientific instrument or hardware-integrated work, and experience developing software under a quality system in medical device, defense, or another regulated industry.
You'd be one of a small number of engineers on the instrument software, with direct access to the hardware, the users, and the technical decisions.
