Dedicated License for using LabVIEW in Continuous Integration Systems

Status: Completed

Hi Jorn!

Thank you for your idea. We have taken your feedback and added a new continuous integration license option for LabVIEW. This gives you the ability to use any of the build and compile capabilities of LabVIEW for a much lower price point. We don't have much web content for it yet but feel free to contact your local NI representative and they should be able to get you a license. Thanks again for the idea!

Regards,

Having a continuous integration system is an essential component of software development:

Continuous Integration ProcessContinuous Integration Process

This system requires automating the building process.

The LabVIEW development environment unfortunately does not have built-in tools to achieve this easily.

But the community has supplied a few sollutions to achieve this: CLI Tool

On of the biggest hurdles that yet remain, is the fact that the application builder is inherently tied to the development environment.

This requires a valid license for the environment and all toolkits / technologies used in the source code of the product you intend to build.

My proposal would be to have a special "CI" license in which all required modules and toolkits are activated, and that would allow the development environment to launch in some sort of protected mode that prevents users from actively developping code (while still allowing scripting functions), for the sole purpose of building applications.

This could potentially be used as a LabVIEW Viewer license as well.

I passed this idea to the business side of NI. It attracted some attention as a use case that hadn't really been considered before, at least not from the specific angle of the command line tools. Your idea was placed on some agendas that get passed up the management chain. After that, I lose viability into the process of how we decide the packaging and licensing of LabVIEW. I just wanted to let you know that the idea has merit and will at least be discussed for future releases. No promises, but thank you for your useful feedback.

Hi Collin,

Thank you for the update!

This is definately a step forward for the LabVIEW development environment to be accepted as equals amongst other development environments.

We appreciate the effort you and your team, as well as others like Aristosqueue have put into getting this idea the attention required to get this implemented.

Kind Regards,

Jorn
