Not annoyed. You can't compare GPIB and serial. GPIB has a well defined interface (at least since 488.2). Serial does not. GPIB does not support a multitude of baud rates, parity, stop bits, etc. GPIB instruments support standard queries (i.e. *IDN?) and well defined termination (i.e. the EOI line). Serial instruments have no such standard so no attempt is ever made to identify an instrument that has a serial connection. It would just take to long to go through the thousands of different possibilities.

thank you for those informations.
I'm quite a newbie in electronics and instruments controll so that I have some troubles and open questions. The things start to work in those days since I'm slowly learning about this subject also thanks to this forum.
