GPIB-USB-HS+ not return the *IDN? string

Hi All

Recently we purchased two GPIB-USB-HS+ units and it does not return the *IDN? string
while some (purchased earlier/same model) return the *IDN? string.

I used the same instrument(Anritsu Synthesizer MG3694B)/setup to verify the *IDN? string while some return
and some don't return.
I tried GPIB-USB-HS+ and GPIB-USB-HS as well.
Also I tried installing the latest driver (Version:NI4882_1760f0) and old versions.

Hey master9991,

Do you receive any errors when you write or query the *IDN? command?

Or are you only receiving errors when you try to read the response?

I don't receive any errors while writing, reading or querying.

The *IDN? returns some garbage characters with some GPIB-USB-HS+ units in our factory while it returns normally what is expected with some GPIB-USB-HS+ units.

Not sure if some part is missing or a bad solder inside or needs some fimware/fpga updates.

I checked with a recently purchased GPIB-USB-HS+ unit and it did not work as well.

Hey master9991,

  • Can you successfully connect to your device in NI MAX when using the faulty GPIB-USB-HS+ cable?
  • Do you receive any errors when you perform a self-test in NI MAX?
  • Just to make sure, are you isolating the GPIB-USB-HS+ cable in your troubleshooting? As in, the cable is the only thing you're switching between tests.

It may be worth creating a service request if you purchased the GPIB-USB-HS+ cable through NI.

Thank you for the reply Ryan.

All the testing was done through NI-MAX.

The test setup is the same.

Only switched between the good/faulty GPIB-USB-HS+ cables while testing through NI MAX.

Yes I am isolating the GPIB-USB-HS+ cable while trouble shooting.

Also tried some GPIB-USB-HS cables and I see the same problem. Some work and some don't.

Hey master9991,

From where did you purchase the cables? A few other forums mention faulty cables coming from some third party groups.

I would encourage you to contact NI support at 1-866-275-6964 to help you further with the issue. One of our technical supporters could collect more details about your unit and this could help us better understand why you may be seeing certain errors from that particular cable.

Best regards,
