Hello,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments!
If the NXT install is prompting you for LabVIEW 8.6 I believe that you may not have the correct toolkit downloaded to install. You can download the 2010 software from this link: LabVIEW for FIRST Tech Challenge Toolkit Download.
Is this the location that you originally downloaded the toolkit or did you get it from somewhere else? Please try to install the toolkit from this location and let me know if you have any issues during that process.
I hope this helps! Have a great day!
Thanks!

Note I was able to doiwnload and unzip the new toolkit.
As you can see in the attached file- I have lab view 9.0 running and the install is suggestion that i need to install lab view 9.0 and nxt module 9.0 before I can install the toolkit.
I was wondering how i get the 9.0 nxt module to work if I installed 9.0

Hello,
I believe you are getting this error because you have installed LabVIEW 2009 and are trying to install the FTC Toolkit. However, in order to install the FTC Toolkit you need to install the NXT Module first. So it is prompting you to install the NXT Module before installing the FTC Toolkit. Here are the installation instructions from the download page for both MAC and Windows:
Mac Download and Install Instructions
Windows Download and Install Instructions
Please let me know if you are still seeing the error after following these steps or if you have any questions on the process and I will be happy to assist you.
Thanks!

Just as a quick clarification the software you need to install is as follows.
The NXT and FTC installers are both contained in a single zip file. Any patches or updates to the software will be distributed through the same download link. The current version of the FTC software is 2010.0.0f2. You can check this in LabVIEW by selecting Help»About FTC Toolkit...

Hello,
I'm coaching a new team this year, and I'm running into the exact same problem. I just installed labview 9 and I downloaded the FTC Toolkit 2010_f3. I extracted all from the archive and ran the setup program. The setup program refuses to install because I do not have the NXT module installed. I referenced the link at the top of this discussion, and the page only has the 2010_f3 update which is what complains about a missing NXT module. So how does one get that mysterious NXT module support?
Could someone post a specific link to the file? Thanks!

Never mind, found it finally. All I had to do was post a question first!

At least I hope that's the right link.

Just to be clear, the process for the FTC 2010-2011 season is slightly different than the one posted Oct 22, 2009 by BLAQmx. The LabVIEW Education Edition included in this year's FTC kit already includes the NXT Module. So the only add-on you need is the FTC Toolkit (www.ni.com/ftc).
If you are using a commercial version of LabVIEW 2009 or the Student Edition of LabVIEW 2009 (included in last year's FTC kit), you will need to manually install the NXT toolkit first.

I've consolidated installation and activation instructions into the following document: Installing and Upgrading LabVIEW 2009 and the FTC Toolkit
