How to connect the Kinect to the cRIO?

We are considering buying the C Series USB Single Module Carrier.  We are looking for more information as to whether this would work with the cRIO II, and if the usb slot would allow you to plug in the Kinect.

Hi Dman,

This will definitely NOT work with the cRIO-FRC II. The Kinect should be used with the Driver Station computer, and should not be directly connected to the robot or cRIO controller.

You've got things mixed up a bit... That is a USB device, not a host.  The only thing you could plug in is a computer (a USB host).  Also, it is a carrier, similar to the cRIO-FRC II (in as much as they both can have c-series modules plugged into them).  It cannot do what you want to do with it for many reasons.  Sorry.

There is an option to use the Kinect as a sensor.  Reading in to similar threads on Chief Delphi people say that you can put a separate computer onto the robot and plug the connect into there then have that computer send data to the cRIO.

I am not sure the FIRST legality of using a second computer but it sounds like a lot of weight and work to be able to use the Kinect as an additional camera when you already have the axis camera. The entire Kinect API is built on recognizing people so I don't think much of that is going to be useful for using it as a sensor.
