Error Cluster Constant for LV 2011

Download here the Error Cluster Constant that was demonstrated at NI Week 2011.

When you get the .zip file, unzip the files into this location:

  • LabVIEW 2011\vi.lib\ErrorConstant

The files should appear directly in that directory, not in any subdirectory. If the file is unzipped anywhere else, you may have trouble with LV being unable to find missing files.

You can then open this VI:

  • LabVIEW 2011\vi.lib\ErrorConstant\Error Constant_TEST.vi

to see the error cluster constant in several configurations.

To drop this constant on your own diagrams, select "VI from disk..." in the palettes and pick the "Error Constant.xnode" file. You can also edit your palette set to include this file.

Re: Error Cluster Constant for LV 2011

Looks very useful.  A few suggestions:

  • It would be nice to be able to either set the maximum width, or to set a different string to show inside the constant.
  • It looks as though user-defined errors (in user.lib/errors) are listed all together under "Miscellaneous" - what if each error file could be its own Error Code Range?  The difficulty appears to be that the XML file doesn't have a nice title (unless you take the "xxx" from xxx-errors.txt).
  • When clicking Explain Error, the window pops up before centering on the monitor, so it looks like it flashes.
  • Any chance of removing the passwords?   'Tis only an XNode after all...

Re: Error Cluster Constant for LV 2011

  • The resize behavior continues to be a favorite topic of conversation. Setting another string to show inside the constant would invalidate the behavior of the string updating when loaded on another localization machine.
  • Every user file can be in its own category by using the Family tag... it's a tag that hasn't been exposed in the user error code file editor in the past because we weren't using the field anywhere. Now that we will be, the editor probably ought to be updated to show that...

    Here's an example:

    <nifamily familyname="LabVIEW" displayname="LabVIEW">
    </nifamily>

  • The Explain Error behavior has been CAR'd to me already, but thanks.
  • No chance of removing the passwords. Sorry... officially this is unreleased tech.
