From color-changing decorations to dynamic process feedback
In chemical process diagrams, decorations and custom controls are often used to represent tubing and valves.
Decorations can change color directly, but custom controls cannot. As a workaround, a decoration can be placed on top of or behind a control, so it looks like the control itself is changing color.
Changing the color of a decoration is easy—once you have a reference to it. Finding that reference, however, is not always straightforward.
It would be helpful if changing a valve position resulted in a clear visual effect—such as a color change—not only on the valve itself, but also on parts further downstream.
This presentation shows a simple trick to quickly access decoration references, making color changes much easier, and how to pass changes in process conditions through the rest of the diagram.

VI History Suite is a free VS Code extension for reviewing VI changes across commits via right-click “VI History” on LabVIEW files. It supports Linux and Windows, can use Docker or installed LabVIEW via CLI, and includes a customizable version through /github/spec-kit.
