Drinking the rainbow

It was my second time attending NI Week and I had gotten into a closed door session about what would become the next new thing in LabVIEW.  It was all day Thursday with meetings with R&D talking about all kinds of future possibilities.  I was excited.  I found my people and was giddy and I didn’t want the fun to end.  At the end of the day some from NI were walking around asking about who would be staying the night and who would like to go to an after party.  This was an opportunity to have personal conversations with NI about stuff and I was interested.  So I showed up to this somewhat fancy restaurant which was closed just for this event.  There were probably about 15 people from NI, and about 15 non-NI people.  I was the youngest in the group.  There was good food, an open bar, and great conversations.

The waiter came around asking what people would like to drink.  I’m not a beer guy and it was an open bar so I could get anything I wanted.  Earlier that day I had been talking to Becky Linton about drinks and she said one thing she does when she can’t figure out what to drink is she will ask for something blue since they are usually sugary and easy to drink.  So I told the waiter at this somewhat fancy place “I would like something blue”.  He looked a bit confused and said “blue?”, I said “yes, blue, the color”.  So the waiter took the rest of the orders and left.  A few minutes later the bartender came over and asked what I ordered and I had to reiterate, “something the color blue” and he left somewhat enthusiastically.  When the order arrived it was blue, and all 30 people at the place were interested in the weird drink I ordered.  It was strong but good.  So I finished it and the waiter asked if I’d like another blue drink and I said “No I want a drink that is green”.  A little later the bartender came over with a green drink and was enjoying getting to mix things up and see what he could make.  After that I ordered a red drink, and then a purple drink.  It wasn’t until later in the night that I realized drinking 4 really strong drinks in a short amount of time might have been a bad idea.

When I get drunk I get loud.  I started yelling comments and criticism about LabVIEW and NI quite loud.  And at some point I stopped yelling mid sentence and looked around.  What I saw was a room full of 30 people all eyes on me, hanging on to every drunken word I said.  It was at that moment I realized, I should not have the attention of all of these important people on me, while so drunk, and I tried calming down and sobering up.

I’ve ordered drinks by color at a ton of bars over the years.  I call it drinking the rainbow.  Never have I made it that far into the rainbow as I did that night.

I have learned that it is a bad idea to "Drink and NI" myself.  :þ.  Thankfully I have not ever seen a Tag "HeIsDrunkAgain!" (Although I once bribed a moderator to pull a post 😠)

I don't know why but this triggered a 14 year old comedy routine in my memory.

I don't mind, but I have dialed it back. I know the industry well enough, that drinking at a technical conference after hours isn't going to be a taboo.  I was at an NI week once and having a good time and taking pictures of me and my friends. The wet blanket of the group, and only sober person there, came over and demanded I delete my picture since if it ended up on social media it would "ruin their career".  First of all I ain't the social media type, these are for my enjoyment, and memories.  But secondly we weren't doing illegal hard core drugs. We were a bunch of nerds at a bar on 6th street.  Shelley that tequila was appreciated.  It was the only time I drank it and didn't want to spit it out, but I have no idea how much it costs.

That brings back a memory!

So, I was on-site in Guadalajara after hours.  I found myself seated at the hotel bar with the CEO of a premium distillery for tequila.  He learned that I was a straight up superstar for EOL Test and Measurement.  .....

I nearly sold a system for ensuring that his product would have exact consistency for odor, color, clarity, ect..

Turns out hiring human QC experts was cheaper.   Nice work, if you can get it.

Drinking during work time isn't allowed by the ethical rules (that as a co-owner I am partially responsible for).

As we all write only 8 hours for a day at a conference, I suppose it's OK to drink outside the 09h-17h window.

However we do have a yearly herring lunch, organized by the 'landlord' for ~60 people.

A 'tradition' (although Hans Christian Andersen mentions the tradition in a Scandinavian setting I don't know of it as a Dutch tradition), the herring is 'swallowed down' with jenever (38% alcohol).

Because of our policy, I skipped the jenever this year...

It's fishy (PI) anyway to be awake while sobering up. And there are only reasonable 3 ways to resolve this: don't drink, sleep, keep drinking...

At my first job there was a rule, no drinking in the office unless the boss was drinking. We were all software programmers sitting in cubes, we weren't doing anything immediately risky. So on a late Friday the manger of our group would sometimes make a martini for the CEO and put it on his desk. If he drank it, we were all clear to have a drink at work. There was even beer in the vending machine at one point, but HR said that went too far.

My rule was over the many years when i was still drinking alcohol: only drink transparent, at least double or triple destillated real fruit spirits. Alcohol made of crops, rice, potato and other things are not for human consumption IMHO. But a triple destillated plum palinka, yes that is something real stuff!
If something is colored and or sugary, that is the best way for a good vomit 🙂

I never paid attention to it but I think you'd be out of luck in most bars I go to.

All the big holidays include herring and schnaps. Pure vodka or elderberry being the most common ones. I really like the elderberry schnaps. 🙂
