Hack-a-day and the BBC are stating the situation is "sketchy". Not saying we haven't had lots of progression in terms of technology, but we probably have also had lots of progression in pulling the wool over consumer's eyes too.

Yes $4 is a bit extreme, but e.g. bestbuy has two pages worth of no-contract smartphones for under $50.

Why not another hack-a-day article? So here they talk about a couple of pre-paid Android phones that can be rooted pretty easily.

The one they mention is on Amazon right now for $30, but the article mentions it some times goes on sale. With that you have a pocket computer with GPS, memory, flash, screen, battery, and all kinds of other cheap electronics that you can somehow use. Just as a small LCD screen connected to a monitor it could be useful. Maybe have the display always on and showing some notification status. Or have it as controls for your music while at work? Sorry to derail the thread a little.

There seems to be some debate on whether or not these cheap phones have true GPS or just faux GPS by pinging and triangulating cell phone towers. True GPS is expensive. This phone does not have it. It probably won't matter unless you want true GPS capability for remote areas for camping or geocacheing.

And if you strip it down by omitting the screen and, all the other things, you can get a full blown 64 bit Windows 10 PC that is intel based and thus most likely can run LabVIEW and be used for USB based DAQ and such.
The kangaroo was recently mentioned and (with academic discount can be had for about $90, free shipping!).
Looking at the components, the processor alone is $27 from intel, then we need a case, RAM, flash, motherboard, bluetoth, ac WIFI, power supply, docking station, packaging, profit, support infractructure, and so on. Heck, if you buy a Windows 10 license seperately, it costs more than this unit (~$120)!
Years ago, I got a no-name ~10" android tablet for about $50 and it just hangs on the wall as a photoframe. Beautiful screen. Much better than a dedicated, single purpose photoframe. 😄

Wow I just went down a rabbit whole of micro PCs, thank you for that.

I saw the Kangaroo for $99 with free shipping, (Non accademic) with Windows 10. This was for the 2GB model, the 4GB plus version is the one without Windows 10, and is something like $170.

This thread has now become the go-to reference for NI when pointing them to dead links...
Here is the answer I got from NI about the deadlink in this thread:
Hello,
We checked the issue and it seems that the page has been removed from the site. More information on that process can be found here:
