LabVIEW journey starting point

It was probably late 1991 that I got LabVIEW 2.something but the first program I did for a client was with LabVIEW 3.0 in early 1992, I believe.

Of course it was on floppies. Everything was on floppies then - even Windows.

Thanks tst, for linking a thread started by me. Smiley Happy

I think this IS the first time my thread (can I say like this... ?!) has been referred to in some general discussion, that too by the person whom I admire most in these forums for the sheer knowledge of LV & bulls-eye replies in these forums.

I think my exp would be the most unusual LV starting-point exp. Smiley Very Happy

I knew about LV from mid-2002 in my first company, but was never offered a chance to get into the devp team. Smiley Sad  I was an AE carrying PLCs (with perfectly working LADDER/FBD programs already downloaded into their processor by devp engineers in our comp) & connecting them to make them work in clients' places. Smiley Mad

End of 2003, when I & a college friend of mine were talking about all these latest stuff like DSP, VLSI, etc., he told me that he was getting free trial CDs for DSPs TigerSHARC & Blackfin from AD, Bangalore, India. Then, I told him about my frustrationSmiley Sad of NOT being able to get into LV devp team in my company. He told me why I should not try for a free CD of LV. Then we went to a browsing center (Internet is still a bit-costly commodity in India) & searched in Google. I got the address of NI & was surprised that it also existed in B'lore itself. We searched further & then came to know that we need to register in their site in the name of a company to receive the CD. So, he put his home address for my sake in the name of a Virtual Company (see the coincidence, to get a SW used for VI Smiley Wink) to receive the CD.

Luck did not favour us for months in getting it & we totally forgot it altogether. Then one day during Mar 2004, he came to my home during a weekend & gave me the LV 7 Express CD.

My first program was very successful, because I wanted to just show him how good I m in SW programming (since he knew how worst I m in C/C++). Just installed LV 7 Express & somehow found how to open a blank VI & blinked for some time. Smiley Indifferent

Then thro' intuition, with LV's FP resembling VB's Form Window, I navigated thro' the menu & went to the BD. Lt-click nothing happened. Tried rt-click, surprised that something (Functions pallette) popped out. First few times I could not browse thro' it successfully since it disapppeared for wrongly hovering the moiuse. Then somehow placed an Adder function (because I think Numerics always attract a programmer first). Again lt-click/rt-click plays on the Adder function for sometime to find the rt-click short-cut menu again giving out some more options. At this point, my friend got it quickly how it works generally & told me to concentrate more on rt-clicks on this SW (he meant LV). Having go the correct clue, went like this... Rt-click on the Adder (+) function >> Create Control >> Create Indicator, done. Then thro' menu, I again navigated to the FP & asked him to press the Run button direcltly, because I knew well (thro' the appls developed in my company) that to run a LV program, I need to press the Run button. I didnt even bother to Save it, because AI actually feared that the correct Run arrow ahould not become broken at any cost. Smiley Surprised

It was he who after some time found out the reason why there was an asterisk (*) mark on the title bar. Then he advised me to navigate thro' the menus again to find the way to save the program. But I didnt bother to listen to him. I just told him in a tough voice to Run it first & he also did so, laughingly on seeing me in a state of anxiety.

Great!Smiley Happy My first program in life ran w/o throwing/telling me any syntax/stupid errors/warnings. Smiley Wink

From then onwards, he accepted me also as S/W ErSmiley Happy (I patted myself on my back mentally! Smiley Wink).

In July 2004, I joined a 6-month full-time PG Dip in Industrial Automation in which they taught LV procedurally for about 3 weeks in a mocule called PC-based Instrumentation. Mornings were theory & afternoons were LV practicals. Version was 6i. Those were the only 3 weeks I had not been even slightly dull after lunch in my whole career because of the fun of LV.

I think there are some guys on the forum who have used the very first version LV1.x.

One of them is VADave, Using LabVIEW since 1.2.

We can see his depth of knowledge from here, See that the appreciation has come from Ben, another guru. Smiley Happy

I had the privilege of working with him for sometime in my current job. He was in our client side.
