I have a "Google TV", found that if I have looked at anything on my phone I start getting ads for it on Youtube on the TV. Wish I could say, "yeah, don't need any NI ads after 35 years of buying their stuff", lol.

Data can be connected is a whole slew of ways we don't fully know about, for this kind of a connection. The easiest thing to look at is the fact that both of your profiles are at the same computer, and information between sessions are saved in cookies that each can know about. But getting crazy it could do things like know your location, which can be a business, which NI could want to target more, due to the analytics saying that business is a sales opportunity for NI. So then all profiles at that location, might get an increased amount of ads.
When it works well targeted ads are pretty neat. I don't get a barrage of boner pill ads anymore, since the ad provider can know I'm not the demographic for it. A friend of mine was a DJ, and he could have ads on Facebook, only go to students enolled in a specific college, who were part of a fraternity/sorority. He said the targeted ads got more expensive as the number people in the search went down, but the return was much higher that these people would hire him for a party, then just paying to show his ad to every person on Facebook.

"Google TV" is an android OS for smart TVs. Youtube is just one app of many and if you sign in with your google account, the ads will be normalized to your profile unless you pay for ad free Youtube. This is independent of the OS and there are many (Roku, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, and LG webOS, Apple tvOS, Vizio SmartCast, Android TV, etc.).
Further confusing the word salad is the "Youtube TV" app, which mirrors traditional cable TV, including local channels. I have been a subscriber for years. For most channels (especially the local ones), the original ads are shown verbatim. For some higher channels, youtube TV will insert their own ads and I guess this is part of the specific contract with each station. For anything that has been "recorded", ads can be skipped. For others, ads can be replaced with some relaxing Zen scenery for the same duration. Pretty cool. For anything we regularly watch (e.g. news), we delay the start and skip all ads. What a timesaver!
As an interesting side note that I think I mentioned before: One of the professors here told me that he had a contractor working on his roof who was a strong believer in the "flat earth" model. I looked up some of their arguments for comic effect and suddenly Facebook started showing me all these flat earth fan posts in my timeline. I felt like a globe'tard (their words). 😄

This is the algorithm doing what it was meant to do. It likely notices that those that start researching the flat earth topics, tend to consume lots of long form content, on flat earth. The purpose of the algorithm is to retain your attention as long as possible so if it sees you searching for it, it will feed you that as much as you can. I remember having issues with low quality click bait youtube videos. They all seems intriguing and might have a count down, or a good teaser. I'd watch it a bit then I'd be served another, and another, suddenly that would be my whole feed. I changed how I watched videos and primarily only watch creators I'm subscribed to and the amount of low effort junk has gone down.
Also the term Google TV has been used for a few things over the years. I had a Google TV made by LG years ago. The remote had a full QWERTY keyboard on it, and pointer gyroscopic mouse. The disambiguous Google TV lists Chromecast devices as well. They should stop reusing the name of things. It can mean mean an app, an operating system, a TV, or a set top box. I am so glad there is a wiki to try to keep track of what things are named weirding.

Thanks, yes, you are right. Nowadays Google TV is the primary user interface on some smart TVs (e.g. Sony), but you can get exactly the same experience on any other smart (or even dumb!) TV using a google TV streaming device. "Chromecast" is just another service that can run on many platforms. For example, my TV supports Chromecast and Airplay out of the box (some kids and grandkids have iPhones). It all just works. (All this was always problematic just a few years ago!)
I do like the searching capabilities of Google TV. For example you can enter the name of a movie and it will show all services that offer it and how (free, purchase, subscription, etc.) and it knows my subscriptions.
One problem with these smart devices is that they don't really support scenarios where the TV is a family device. 90% of my TV time is together with my wife, so there is no single suitable user. We actually have a shared Gmail account used specifically for multimedia.
