ISO26262 application

The ISO26262 is also involving the testing the process.

The question are:

• How to realise the functional safety assessment of an electronic component in a late phase of a vehicle project?
• How to define the test areas to validate the system conformity to its DFMEA?
• How to select the technology adapted for in-vehicle validation?

Hello Jean-Marc,

That is an interesting question.  As you mentioned, the testing phase is specifically called out in the ISO 26262 standard and there are many things to consider.  I'm not sure we can cover everything you need to know for the standard in this post because the standard itself defines an entire process and testing is just a component of it.

In general, it is important to make sure that your tests relate back to your requirements and you can show traceability for how the test results correspond to initial requirements.  I believe this relates to your second question below.  And it can also address your first question, but that mainly depends upon where you are and how your testing is currently defined.  There are also many considerations to take into account and we have some general best practices and guidelines to make sure that testing is considered throughout the development process.  Feel free to read more here:  https://www.ni.com/en/solutions/transportation/best-practices-for-embedded-software-testing-of-safet...

The other thing to consider is that the standard requires that you use qualified tools while testing.  This is actually a pretty complex topic and it needs to be noted that qualifying a tool can be a lot of manual work.  We are working with a partner of ours, CertTech LLC, to provide a qualification kit for NI TestStand that can save a significant amount of this effort and provide you with the right information to know that NI TestStand is functioning as expected.  You can find more information on it here:  https://www.ni.com/en-us/shop/product/tool-qualifications-kit-for-teststand.html

I hope this helps to give you some information, but if you have other questions, we have a number of partners we work with in this space that can help you in your development process and make sure you're following the standard as needed.

Thanks!
