Until recently, FPGAs were the exclusive domain of electrical engineers. LabVIEW FPGA is a high level synthesis tool that has brought the capabilities of FPGAs to engineers and scientists. However, FPGA based system architecture and hardware selection remains challenging due to the wide range of options and understanding selection criteria. A brief background on the LabVIEW FPGA platform is provided. System architecture selection strategy and design decisions will be reviewed and discussed using applications from the financial, medical imaging, oil & gas, and research industries.
