I've been musing over a "pump up the love" campaign for LabVIEW for a while and I've started a grass roots project called "VIEWvid" on Youtube.

Hi Bill,

I liked your videos. But I noticed you were using LabVIEW 8.6...you could have cut your average video time in half if you had used Quick Drop instead of the palettes... 😉

I was hoping to inspire the KeyKoders to evolve, not crush them!

Using Keydrop we could fit about an hour of keykoding under the 10-min Youtube limit!

Oops!

Sorry for the true Freudian slip of "Key Drop" for "Quick Drop"....

I meant no bad vibes for Quick Drop... pretty cool.

But I like to keep my left hand on the LabVIEW editing home row of Ctrl,Z,X,C,V,B. I don't see myself leaving to peck for a right-hand character on the QWERTY keyboard.

I have enough trouble finding the number keys as it is...

My left hand hardly ever leaves its default position on the keyboard...I've set up left-handed shortcuts in Quick Drop for almost all of my commonly-dropped objects. Check out my advanced Quick Drop tips before you make your next video. 😉

Brilliance, sheer brilliance!

I'm off to practice my Ctrl-space combo...

I'm also adding a new USB or Bluetooth data acquisition device to my holiday wish list... something along the lines of the "Quick Drop Input Accessory".

Perhaps a multipoint touch pad or smart-phone touch screen than can recognize left hand finger gestures and touch patterns that access the Quick Drop shortcuts?

Please tell me NI has some hardware like this in development...

Hey Darren,

I know it is a bit futuristic, but a 7" LCD touch screen is available starting tomorrow (12/22/2008).

It's initial application is for just a bit more screen real estate next to your primary monitor via USB, but with the touch screen version, I can envision it laying flat in front of my keyboard with my left hand resting on it.

With a bit of LabVIEW magic with either Boolean controls or gesture recognition, I can see it becoming a $199 Quick Drop gadget.

I'm currently evaluating the Livescribe Pulse digital smartpen for data acquisition. Perhaps this can be put into my project queue.

I ordered the MiMo 740 last week as a Christmas present to myself, but it will arrive a bit late

I could see this being used as a detachable primary display on a Windows based PXI chassis.

I don't want to stray too far off thread topic, but speaking data acquisition wise, I hope these types of touch screens become standard issue on just about everything.

They've been using them for fast food POS registers for years....

It's about time the technology filtered "up" into the research, development and production floors...

I looked at your videos and I like the idea of demonstrating the features of LabVIEW. I'm trying to think of a good way to demonstrate parallel processing capabilities. If I come up with a good example, I'll share them. Keep up the good work!

I ordered the MiMo 740 for the touchscreen interface, I wanted to see what I could use it for with LabVIEW. I'm an old CAD guy, and in the 80s and 90s I worked with Summa and Kurta tablets. 2/3 to 3/4 of the tablet was dedicated to macro functions to improve productivity.

I've been experiencing carpal tunnel lately, and thought that a tablet might give my hand and wrist a nice change of postion. I also started thinking about how it might help me to move my head and neck a bit more. Unfortunately, the tablet business appears to have changed since I used them last, and I just felt funny about spending $100 on a toy Wacom tablet.

Update on MiMo monitors:

Dear Customer,

This evening we have learned from our Korean supplier that production
of the UM-740 has been completely suspended.

For the foreseeable future we will be unable to offer the UM-740 for
sale. This has come as quite a surprise to us, and so we would like to
act quickly to make the best of this unfortunate situation.

No monitor for me 😞
