Nothing wrong with that. I do most of my coding with a trackpoint. Sitting in a recliner, laptop on the lap.

(However, the touchpad is inactivated. Hate these things!)

Gabi, interesting choice of touchpad tip. I am currently also using this one. 🙂

LabVIEW finger is no excuse! There are typically at least two more fingers usable for this. 😮 Also make sure to set it to the lightest sensitivity so you need to barely touch it to move the cursor. 😄

photo is not mine, but it is the trackpoint tip i am using. unfortunately i cant use at too high sensitivity, since the mouse begin to behave as a living creature

i have also the touchpad, but i just cant bear it. the thing with my fingers is actually quite annoying, as the fingerprint reader has stopped recognising it (luckily still some other fingers 🙂 ).

Hopefully, (and thanks to labVIEW), we will soon no longer need any fingers to control the cursor and mouse buttons

All we really need is a mind control interface. 🙂

While a "LabVIEW finger" is a serious condition, a "LabVIEW mind" is arguably probably OK. 🙂

I wonder how long it will be until camera technology can effectively monitor eye movements such that the cursor can be moved simply by looking at different parts of the screen? I've often thought that ocular-driven positioning would be the next step in HMIs after hand-driven positioning like mice, touchpads, trackballs, red nubs, etc. Now if I only had access to some sort of "Image Acquisition" hardware and software, I'd been in business!

From what little I know about the subject, I'm guessing cheap USB cameras won't quite have the resolution and frame rates I need to discern subtle eye movements... 🙂

Its not quite that easy Christian. I got my hands on a CVS along with a fire-wire camera. I quickly discovered the resolution on the camera was not good enough to measure the eye movement sufficiently.

If it was, the DO channels would have been hard wired into an old track-ball and my carpel tunnel would have been history by now.

I resorted to counting pocket change before I returned the CVS.

Let's look at the newer (and more expensive) model:

The low end uses a simple digital camera, while only the high end uses a high resolution camera with strobe. It seems they are using very sharply defined IR beams to reflect off the eye surface for tracking. So having a moderate zoom lens with a width of view of about "ear-to-ear" might give enough resolution even at 640x480. Add an IR filter, and we get a point reflections that we can fit to a 2D gaussian to get better resolution of the exact center than the pixel spacing (sort of like a reverse anti-aliasing).

Why not mount an IR point source and an ultralight camera with a macro lens an inch away from the eye on some eye glass frame? Now we don't even need to worry about head movements!
