Incongruous sightings of LabVIEW/NI

After a busy week at work trying to make headway on an automated product test system, I'd gone back to my parents' for a belated Thanksgiving meal (no public holidays for us in the UK, even as an expat 😕 ) and woke up this morning with nothing to do but read the papers.

Flick to the Sports section in the Telegraph, and there's an article on Christian Eriksen, one of Tottenham Hotspurs' new signings this year. The interviewer caught up with him at an education day for a demo of the club's future UTC. Part way through, I read the following line:

"The 21-year-old joined prospective students in trying out Haptic robot arms and a myRIO power helmet, the new wave of technology designed for sport and the medical arena."

Curiosity piqued, a quick Google takes me here:

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/christian-gets-technical-261113/

Remember, that's Eriksen - not Altenbach 😉

Nice bit of free publicity!

Anyone else had any incongruous NI/LabVIEW sightings recently?

Sat waiting for a haircut at the barber, leafing through an ancient copy of Top Gear magazine, I stumbled across this:

The article's about a former researcher in a division of BAE Systems, who is labelled as 'the real life Q'. Pretty sure I recognise the researcher's name in the context of SLAM (simultaneous localisation and mapping) - will check when I get home!

I saw some LabVIEW code in the PBS documentary "To Catch a Comet" that aired shortly after Rosetta delivered Philae to 67P.

If I recall the scene correctly they were operating some sort of vaccuum chamber and heater to get their simulated comet to sublimate. As you can see it's 27:00 into the show.

Tom Scott does all kinds of interesting things (his rants at the Computerphile channel are always fun - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL96C35uN7xGLux5q2c4P_IqbKF11-pfsR ).

Anyway, one of his recent videos was in a wind tunnel, where the LV program for the control system stands out easily - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0fViGU-Snc

So one of the tech sites had a story about a machine playing the violin. The concept was not super unique (the most immediate example which came to mind was the Guitar Hero demo), but I figured I would give it a look - http://www.sethgoldsteinkineticsculptures.com/

The website isn't that great (each machine only has a small section), but then I did notice a familiar name in the description ("Computer control was provided by Randall Pursley"), so I looked at the linked video and sure enough:

I am a member of Sigma Pi Sigma so I get updates from Physics Today including job listings. I review them just to keep up but I found a interesting job listed...

A LabVIEW Developer.

This is the URL

http://jobs.physicstoday.org/jobs/6931737/labview-developer?dm_i=21FU,3913B,H9XCHI,BMXQ2,1

May be one of Y'all can make use of this info.

Otherwise take it as sign that LV has become a part of the physics world.

LV has been in the physics world for years. I know they use LabVIEW at the CERN supercollider to control the imaging. I doublt they do any math with it, tho, since most of CERN's math code was probably written 30 years ago in Fortran. Nothing really new happens in physics very often.
