How do I connect a strain gage based displacement sensor to a NI USB 6343 DAQ?

Can I use the USB 6343's internal +5V voltage output to excite a strain gage based displacement sensor? Or do I need an additional external power source?

Hi ppinto,

I think you should have in your possession the sensor's datasheet. And there you will be able to find your answer. Did you already have a look at it?

Sounds like you need to figure out the current draw of the sensor and see if the NI USB 6343 DAQ can output that much current.

You should also consider the noise which may be present on the +5 V supply line. It will likely be at some switching power supply frequency on the tens or hundreds of kHz. The common mode rejection on differential inputs is probably rather poor at those frequencies so the noise may get through.

Thanks for you comments. I have connected the LVDT to the +5V supply line and it is working fine. I am now looking into the noise level, to see if it affects my readings.
