It seems like we're running up against an issue using USB on the latest Linux kernal rather than an issue with the VISA driver. There's a discussion forum post around the topic here.

Hi imiu,

I wanted to confirm that we did do the same installation that you reported and were able to see our GPIB instruments. We finally tried the same GPIB USB device that you were using and did not see it, leading us to  identify the issue that Josh linked above. Our 488.2 driver cannot currently support USB GPIB devices on certain Linux kernels due to some changes in the licensing for the underlying USB driver. We do plan on adding support back into the driver as soon as we can.

This seems to match what you're experiencing except that I would expect you to be able to install the software and use the GPIB-USB device on the older kernel.

Can we have an estimate of the time frame when to expect the fix on GPBI-USB?

In the mean time I'm trying to test the GPIB-ENET/100 on the same VISA installation (Linux 6.5, kernel 2.6.32) that I use for GPIB-USB.

1. Are there any other software components required to have GPIB-ENET100 working on the installation mentioned above?

2. Is there a NI  tool for Linux to help with the initial setup of the box (Ex: IP assignment) ?

I'm trying to connect to an instrument via GPIB-ENET/100 from a Linux machine but VISA cannot see the instrument on the bus.

What other components, if any, are required for GPIB-ENET/100 to work? My machine is a RHEL6.5, kernel 2.6.32.

I may have missed it, but has the enet 100 been added with the "add GPIB hardware wizard"? That's one of the big differences between the USB GPIB controllers and the ENET GPIB controllers.

See the attached pictures that shows all apps that were installed by VISA64 installation.

Is there other wizard that I should use instead of the one shown in the captures?

If "yes", please paste a link.

Here are the version that I use:

-NI-VISA 14.5.0.iso

-NI488-3.2.0f0.iso

NOTE: Another experiment was to use a NI ENET-to-RS232 instead ENET-GPIB/100.

Folowing the same steps but selecting "Ethernet Serial" instead "TCP/IP", the wizard was

able to see and add the new device(ENET-to-RS232)!

Isn't the "Ethernet" side the same for both devices, ENET-to-RS232 and ENET-GPIB/100?

The VISA Driver wizard is used to associate VISA with USB or PCI devices. We are actually looking a different wizard that should be located at /usr/local/natinst/ni4882/bin/gpibexplorer. Have you been able to run this wizard?

That worked! I can see the instruments that are attached on the GPIB bus.

What is the procedure in case of an ENET-RS232/4? How can be discovered and add it as a resource?What application needs to launched?

Glad to hear that worked! Initial setup can be a little tricky with all the different utilities, but you should be able to add the enet 232 as a static resource using the VISA Configuration utility.

1. I got VISA64 working on RHEL and would like to change the IP addr of a GPIB/Enet1000 that has been detected on the network.

"Configure" button does not start the configuration application.
