Teleop changes my gamepad function to intermittnt

I am not the programmer on my team but I am trying to help research this problem for him.  When we move to teleop on nxt our driving gamepad works great but our lift and rotating pick up dc motors work intermittently.  We have to constantly push buttons because they keep stoping.  Competition in 4 days.  Please help.
