iPad VirtualBench app Crashes

My iPad VirtualBench app crashes after connecting to the VB-8012 hardware.

1) VB-8012 never attached to a Windoz box.

2) iPads tested were Model MD368LL/A (3rd generation iPad, Wi-Fi and AT&T, 64 GB) and MH312LL/A (most recent generation iPad Air 2, Wi-Fi and AT&T, 128 GB) each running IOS 8.1.3 (12B466).

3) Both iPad Wi-Fi can join the VB-8012 (hardware) network.

4) Running the iPad VirtualBench app...

   a) I am able to select the correct (wireless) device (VB8012-serialnumber)

   b) VirtualBench app responds that it is connected to the wireless device

   c) iPad VirtualBench app crashes

5) Demo mode works fine.

Any questions, comments, suggestions, or the like?

Hi William,

First, I'd like some basic background information:

  • Which version of the iOS app are you using?

Next, what are your iPads' radio settings when you try to connect?

  • Clearly the WiFi radio is on since you can join its network and see the device in the app.
  • Is the cellular radio on as well?

If the cell radio is on, does the crash happen if you disable it [1]?

If you sent crash reports to Apple [2], they haven't been pushed to my team's data store yet.

When I use my VirtualBench from my iOS 8.1.3 tablet, I don't observe a crash, which means there's something different between your configuration and mine. I hope to hear from you soon 🙂

Joe,

I'm running the latest version of iOS (iOS 8.1.3).

I don't understand "iPads' radio settings" and "cell radio."

On the iPad Air 2, I don't have an AT&T data plan set up yet.

On the older iPad (3rd generation), I have an AT&T plan.

OK, using the links you provided,

I disabled Cellular Data on the iPad 3rd Gen.  No change.  Still doesn't work

Cellular Data is not set up on the iPad Air 2.  No change. Still doesn't work

Finaly, I turned on the diagnostics and had the "LatestCrash.ips" sent to Apple (I guess).  Similar dump from both iPads.

Thanks for your assistance.  We'll figure this out yet.

Bill

I'm running the latest version of iOS (iOS 8.1.3).

I'm curious about the version of the VirtualBench app you're using, not the version of iOS.

There are two ways to see the version:

  1. Go to the Settings app, and scroll the left menu down to the bottom, and you'll see a list of apps you have installed. If you see VirtualBench, tap it and the right panel will show you the version.
  2. Go to the App Store app, tap on Purchased in the bottom bar, then tap on VirtualBench and scroll down to the Information section, where the version will be listed.

Joe,

I'm using VirtualBench 1.1.0 on both iPads.  I downloaded the app on my son's iPad Air 2 this morning.  Boy, I sure do like his iPad!

Awesome, thanks 🙂

I also want to know the version of the firmware on your VirtualBench.

Do you have access to a Windows laptop or PC with WiFi? If you do, follow these steps:

  1. Join your laptop to the VirtualBench WiFi network.
  2. Open Chrome or Internet Explorer and navigate to 172.16.0.1 (this is the VirtualBench IP address when it is an access point).
  3. A National Instruments page will load, and a few entries down, you'll see "Firmware Revision".

Joe,

I am unable to determine what my VB-8012 firmware version might be.  I installed the Windoz drivers and application to a laptop but the laptop is not attached to the internet so checking the firmware using the File>Search for Firmware Update won't work.  My organization does not allow wireless.

Perhaps I'll take it home tonight and see if my wife's MacBook Pro and see it.

Hi Bill,

You don't need Internet access to check the firmware version. Connect your laptop to the VirtualBench network like you did with your iPad. From there, follow my steps above. The VitualBench has a mini website on it, and you can view it with your laptop.

Hi Bill,

You can check the firmware revision by connecting the device to your laptop with USB. Once you're connected, there are two possible ways to do this:

1.) With the VirtualBench applciation using your device, go to:

File -> About

There will be a section called "device" that includes your device's name, model, serial number, firmware version, etc.

2.) (assuming you have the VirtualBench drivers installed) Open Measurement and Automation Explorer (a.k.a. NI MAX). Your device should appear there. If you click on it, the right-hand pane will list the "Frimware Revision".

Thanks for all of your help gathering information for us, we would realy like to find the root cause of this crash!

Regards,

William Earle
