What causes the DIO-96 switch to hangup?

Hello, I am running a custom made program on Visual Basic 6 and I'm using the NI-DAQ and DIO-96 board to send and receive signals from the PLC of another machine. However there have been many occasions when the port I am using in the switch would not change status and my program would hangup. I would like to ask what could be causing this and is there a way to avoid this like say flush the buffer of the switch or something? Thanks!

If the program is hanging than I don't think we will be able to programatically recover from this state.  Could you give some more information on the behavior you are seeing?  When does it happen?  How often? etc.
Does the board still respond in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) after the program freezes?
Have you been able to reproduce this behavior with an example program?
