Project Information

Project Title: Electronic Injection and Identification System

Hardware & Software Used: Customised Camera, LM3S608 Microcontroller, Customised Mechanical Arrangement and Control Circuitry, ULN Interfaced Motors and Drivers,  Labview, Matlab, Eclipse(Open Source), Putty(Open Source), Packet Tracer(Open Source)

What challenge/problem are you trying to solve through your application:

Scarcity of technological advancement in drug administration system combined with lack of technical manpower in this sector especially in rural areas is a main reason behind selecting this problem. Telemedicine needs a system to inject drug into  patient arm either by the patient himself or by a trained person from a remote location. Thousands of people die everyday either due to medical errors during drug administration or due  to lack of amenities required to inject life saving drug.

Dieseases like polio, hepatitis etc. can be prevented by mass vaccination but due to lack of self drug administering technologies, mass vaccination is not possible.

Patients of diabetes are required to inject insulin injection everyday, there is no efficient technology for support.

How does your application solves the above mentioned challenge/problem:

We have developed a labview based image processing algorithm to detect vein through IR imaging technique then via intensity measurement most apt co-ordinates are extracted and motor are actuated accordingly to move the injection system to the required position. Amount of drug to be administered can be selected by the patient or by trained person from a remote location through a network design by us.Thus accurate vein detection and automatic injection can be implemented for improving the medical facilities. Remote monitoring and documentation can be done, transforming mass vaccination -a reality. It will help patient, who regularly have to bear the pain of self drug administration. Error handling machanism designed in this system help to deliver drug without any error.

Description of Project:

Vein detection is one of the latest biomedical techniques researched today. While the concept behind the method is simple, there are various challenges to be found throughout the design and implementation of a device concerning the light-ing system and the image processing algorithms. While a very few devices based on the infrared technique have been implemented, there still exists a strong need to develop such medical devices. The major problem faced by the doctors today is di culty in accessing veins for intra-venous drug delivery. With improper detec-tion of veins, severe problems like bruises, rashes, blood clot etc. occur. Therefore a non-invasive subcutaneous vein detection system has been developed success-fully based on near infrared imaging using the ARM 9 processor and LABVIEW as the development platform. A customized webcam is used for capturing the vein images. These images are low in contrast and clarity, therefore, contrast enhance-ment histogram equalization algorithm is tested using matlab integrated labview appication. The resultsare compared and implemented on the hardware. The hardware comprises of the ARM processor, customized IR sensitive camera, mechanical setup and a motor driving circuitry.
