I don't know if the behavior has changed but it is not difficult to synchronize if you place the icon folder under source code control just like you are placing the sequences, step modules, etc. under source code control.

One untested idea: You might use a symlink to redirect the directory to the server . Examples how to create symlinks on http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/
