A feedback on new community site

I'm not so happy about the aspect the Deveoper Zone Community has taken after the recent upgrade.

For the first, to reach it you need to follow an anonymous "Code sharing" link in Developer Zone homepage: if you want to create an active community of developers I suppose the first thing is to make it easily recognizable and reachable, not to hide it in an obscure link!

The same with the content of the community itself: previous version had the merit to permit easy localization of the material in it, at least searching by development environment. I have hardly searched for such a feature in present site without success! A search can be made only for free words, while in my opinion it would be useful to have a subject search or browse feature.

Re: A feedback on new community site

Hello,

First, thanks for the feedback on the new community.

Let me respond to your concerns and I would definitely like your thoughts in reply.

On the topic of obscure linking - I completely understand.  There are several variables affecting that, however suffice it to say there are more grand/visible/explicit links and connections to ni.com in general coming.  Please also note that if you attempt to visit the beta site (http://community.ni.com) you'll be redirected to the new site, so those familiar with the old would thereby find the new stie by default.

Regarding the content navigation/search via development environment etc., similar functionality exists albeit from Developer Zone.  More specifically, the developer zone homepage (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/main) has faceted navigation as a standard navigation context on the left hand side of the page.  Near the bottom you'll find a content type facet which has Example, Tutorial, and other values/links.  Clicking Example, for example, will then reveal only Example Program content with further faceted navigation on the left by facets such as Product.  Product can be used to filter down into Software -> LabVIEW (or other environments) -> .......

The general theme will be to better integrate the experience from a content and navigation perspective on ni.com.  Please definitely continue to give us your feedback - you can also do so in the Feedback community in the new community.

Best,
JLS

Re: A feedback on new community site

Roberto,

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback.  I too understand your concerns around the obscure linknig of the NI Developer Zone Community.  Rest assured that in the near future, the obscureness will no longer be an issue.  We are taking a phased approach both the roll-out and the promotion plan around the new Community.  We will be making continual improvements to this site.  For now, we are relying on word-of-mouth promotion around the Community, while receiving feedback from key contributors.  I would encourage you to provide any feedback regarding aspects of the New Community that you like or dislike.  It will help us to prioritize what comes next, and what issues are addressed first.

Respectfully,

Re: A feedback on new community site

Hi Jeffrey and JLS,

thanks for answering. I am wandering what are you planning on the near future regarding the developer zone :smileywink: Let's wait and see what will be coming on!

At the same time, nevertheless, it seems to me that the word-of-mouth promotion is not so active: contents on the so-called "code sharing" area are steady and I see no recent interventions; additionally, the great part of the material provided in the past has not been associated with the original owner (my documents as well :smileysurprised: :smileywink: ) which could discourage some person from contributing anymore...

I am personally curios about that "Discussions" area: could you clarify what are you aiming to and in what this area differs from the actual forum boards?

Last item, a minor but annoying one: when logging to the forums the process is semi-automated (I need to click on the "Login" link but after it all follows automatically) while in the developer zone area I need to reenter my e-mail and password to be recognized in the site. (Curios again: when accessing MyNI from scratch I am automatically recognized without doing nothing! Couldn't this facility be extended to the forums and the developer zone?)

At least for the forums, you can use the following address to log in automatically:

Re: A feedback on new community site

Thanks TST, this is a good suggestion :smileyhappy:

And it permits also automatic redirection to a specific board: as an example http://sine.ni.com/niforum/niforum?lang=US&requireLogin=True&forumDU=http://forums.ni.com/board?boar... let me enter automatically into the CVI board.

Why would anyone want to do that :smileysurprised:?

LOL!!

I just came across this thread..  LOL!

Either tst doesn't spend much time in the CVI forum.  Or he's a funny guy :smileyvery-happy:
