Well, I found out what my problem was. I didn't have enough space on the C: drive to hold the whole 500 MB download. I was saving it to my E: drive where there is plenty of room, but IE 5.5 first downloads it to your Temporary directory (on C by default) and then copies it to the destination. And IE 5.5 doesn't give any error message when it runs out of room on the C: drive.
